Why Climate Change Could Mean
More Delayed Flights
No one enjoys a delayed flight, but as our weather gets
warmer, we can expect more of them.
That's according to experts, who say that the heat of the
summer might cause more delays.
Bloomberg looked at US data for flight delays at airports in
Chicago and New York from June to August in 2022 and from
January to March in 2023. It found that there were more
delayed flights in the summer months at both airports.
When the temperature rises above 39 degrees Celsius,
things get very difficult for airlines, Bijan Vasigh, a professor
at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US,
told Bloomberg.
The air is thinner when it gets hot and that makes it harder
for planes to take off. In thinner air there is not as much lift, so
more power is needed.
When they need more power, it helps to have a lighter
airplane.
That might mean pilots have to make last-minute decisions
to reduce the weight on board by dumping fuel, passengers
or baggage — meaning the plane will probably be delayed.
The problem gets worse at airports that are at a higher
altitude where the air is already thinner, and at airports with
short runways, since planes need more space to get up to a
high speed.
But thin air is not the only problem. Smoke from wildfires —
that have been happening all around the world in the summer
of 2023 —can also cause flights to be delayed and canceled.
Of course, the summer is also a busy time when millions of
people fly, and weather is not the only cause of delays — but
our hotter climate doesn't seem to be helping.

Kids can show anxiety symptoms early on
Kristen Rogers - CNN
Excessive clinginess to parents can be a sign a child is struggling with an anxiety disorder, experts have said.
(...)
Anxiety disorders are marked by persistent and excessive worries. While someone with generalized anxiety might worry about various everyday things, someone with social anxiety typically has ‘intense or persistent fears or worries about being judged negatively by other people’, said Rachel Busman, a New York-based clinical psychologist and cognitive and behavioral consultant _______ specialized in anxiety.
One fifth of children worldwide have anxiety symptoms that are clinically elevated, or worse than what is considered normal, according to a 2011 study.
Anxiety symptoms can be difficult to spot, but the sooner parents notice signs, the earlier mental health professionals ‘can help parents and kids understand what is happening’, said Dr. Rebecca Baum, a professor of general pediatrics and adolescent medicine at the University of North Carolina.
Children with anxiety might begin to avoid anxietyinducing situations. This behavior can facilitate a cycle that makes their fears bigger and bigger.

The arm of Liberty
Anonymous
The Statue of Liberty is probably the ______ icon of the
USA.
( ...) When the American Civil war ended, Édouard de
Laboulaye wanted to commemorate the end of the slave trade
with a gift. He and other people who opposed slavery raised
money and hired a sculptor, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, to
design the Statue. Bartholdi later employed the French
engineer, Gustave Eiffel, to devise its structure.
Eiffel designed the Statue to be built around a massive
metal skeleton, similar to the Eiffel Tower. In 2018, a map
dealer bought some historic papers at an auction in Paris,
which included original plans. After special treatment, the
papers clearly showed that Eiffel’s plans had been changed by
Bartholdi.
(...) We don’t know what Eiffel thought of Bartholdi’s
changes. By then, Eiffel was working on other projects, and
only his assistants were working with Bartholdi.
(...) At first, visitors could climb a ladder to the torch in
Liberty’s arm, but in 1916, there was an explosion on a
nearby island. It damaged the Statue and made it unsafe, and
the stairway to the torch has been closed ever since. During
restoration work in the 1980s, engineers noticed that the
structure inside Liberty’s head, shoulders, and arm were
different from how they were shown on Eiffel’s plans. They
thought that the builders had made mistakes, but some
historians believed that Bartholdi had changed Eiffel’s design.
The newly discovered papers confirm those theories.

Coronavirus: Venice Carnival closes as Italy
imposes lockdown
23 February 2020
Italian officials have cut short the Venice Carnival as they
try to control what is now the worst outbreak of the
coronavirus in Europe.
Authorities in the Veneto region said the event
would end later on Sunday, two days earlier than
scheduled. Italy has by far the highest number of
coronavirus cases in Europe, with 152. Three people have
died.Italy has imposed strict quarantine restrictions in two
northern "hotspot" regions close to Milan and Venice.
About 50,000 people cannot enter or leave several
towns in Veneto and Lombardy for the next two weeks
without special permission. Even outside the zone, many
businesses and schools have suspended activities. and
sporting events have been cancelled. The BBC's Mark
Lowen described the situation just outside the zone. ln
neighbouring Austria, a train from Venice was stopped at
the Austrian border after it emerged that two passengers
had fever symptoms. Austria's Interior Minister Karl
Nehammer later confirmed to the BBC that the pair tested
negative for coronavirus.
ºAll authorities have acted quickly and with great
caution in this case," said Mr Nehammer in a statement.
"The reporting chain worked without delay." Elsewhere, authorities in South Korea and Iran are battling
to control rising numbers of infections. South Korea has
raised its coronavirus alert to the "highest level".
The new strain of coronavirus, which originated
last year in Hubei province in China, causes a respiratory
disease called Covid-19. China has seen more than
76,000 infections and 2,442 deaths.
What is happening in Italy?
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on
Saturday that "extraordinary measures" would come into
force to try to stem the rising number of coronavirus cases.
He said the quarantine restrictions could last for
weeks. Police, and if necessary the armed forces, will have
the authority to ensure the regulations are enforced.
Angelo Borrelli, the head of Italy's Civil Protection
Department, told reporters that 11 O of the confirmed cases
were in Lombardy, with 21 in Veneto with others in EmiliaRomagna and Lazio. Officials reported a third death on
Sunday, an elderly woman from the town of Crema
suffering from cancer. Italian officials say they are still
trying to trace the source of the outbreak.
Universities in Milan have been closed and the
city's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, said schools would also close
their doors while the outbreak continued. "As a precaution I
think that the schools have to be closed in Milan. I will
propose to the president of the region to enlarge the
precaution to the entire metropolitan city area. lt is just a
precautton, we don't want to create parue," he said.
Meanwhile Giorgio Armanì's fashion show, scheduled
to be held (I) Milan (li) Sunday, went
ahead but without any media or buyers present. The show
was livestreamed (lii) its website, lnstagram and
Facebook pages.
